Everyday Again and Again (Screening and Talk by Adnan Yıldız) at e-flux video rental / the reading room

This thursday, Adnan Yıldız will screen his selections for the latest edition of the e-flux video rental (artists and works are listed below), and after the screening he will talk about how the five videos he chose have come together. He invited five artists to add their video work to the e-flux video rental project, as part of his research on audience, fiction and morality. This invitation has been developed into a dialog between the videos considering their artistic approaches and how artists relate to their characters and stories.

Both as a metaphor and as a methodological strategy, Yıldız borrows the point Bakhtin made about Dostoyevski's characters, and adapts it to the current language of video production today. According to Bakhtin, Dostoyevski's characters have the same status as the author: "The character's word about himself and his world is just as fully weighted as the author's word usually is". And in these videos one can appreciate the use of diverse artistic strategies in order to construct their fictional fabric: one is a contemporary translation of a classic piece of literature, another can be seen as a remix of an auto-biography and some popular culture icons, and in another one an artist is framing a moment of reality. Considering the different modes of production, the talk will focus on the position and the role of the artist -as the author- who develops a performative approach/research methodology to create fictional identities.

The talk will also refer to the context of video circulation and some speculative description of its audience, who is online and mostly accessing the material through Youtube.
